Johannes Demandt: Beten – großes Vorrecht und schöne Aufgabe. Eine Anleitung zum Beten: Praying is a privilege and a gift from God. The joyful realisation that communication between humankind and God is possible determines the biblical understanding of prayer. Prayer is a fundamental expression of faith that corresponds to listening to God. This article deals with fundamental questions of prayer, both from a dogmatic perspective and in dialogue with personal observations on current prayer practices in Free Church services. On the one hand, the theological freedom and gift character of prayer are examined, and on the other hand, theological questions about some forms and contents of prayer are formulated.
Carl Heng Thay Buschmann: Festhalten an der Klage als Akt der Hoffnung. Klagetheologische Überlegungen anhand der Hiobpredigten von Johannes Calvin: At first glance, Calvin’s contribution to lamentation appears to be a rejection of rebellion against God in lamentation. However, based on Calvin’s interpretation of Psalm 13 examined in this article, it becomes clear that Calvin does have a positive approach to lamentation. Furthermore, a consideration of Calvin’s sermons on Job shows that he does not argue against lament, but links it to hope and also distinguishes it from inappropriate complaining. As far as the image of God is concerned, Calvin reveals a tension between the idea of God as Provider and the idea of God as Rescuer from distress. In the sermons examined, Calvin does not deal with the question of suffering in abstract terms, but in the ‘language of a sufferer’.
